Former Windham County Sheriff Arraigned

Brattleboro, Vermont - July 17, 2008

A former Captain of the Windham County Sheriff's Department was arraigned Thursday in connection with an inappropriate relationship she allegedly had with a high school student.

Heidi Nelson pleaded not guilty to unlawful restraint. Investigators say she took a 17-year-old girl to Florida without the permission of the teen's parents. Nelson met the girl while teaching a law enforcement class at the Windham Regional Career Center in Brattleboro.

Nelson resigned from the department in June. She had been the highest ranking deputy with the Windham County Sheriff's Department and was second in command at the time of her resignation.
